Seeding recommendations were as follows:
Little Bluestem 1.8 pounds per acre
Blue Grama 0.4 pounds per acre
Switchgrass 1.2 pounds per acre
Prairie Sandreed 1.7 pounds per acre
13. If not provided in the response for Question 12, please provide a description for fertilizer (specific types,
mixtures, quantities, and time of application), if applicable, in accordance to Rule 6.4.5(2)(f)(iii).
Based on information from a previous reclamation plan, the Soil Conservation Service
recommendation called for fertilizes 0-20-20,44;-12, and 10-10-10 applied at a rate of 100 pounds
per acre. Application will be applied as recommended by the manufacturer.
14. In accordance with Rule 6.4.5(2)(f)(iv), please specify if trees, shrubs, etc. will be planted as a part of
revegetating the site and if so the type, quantity, size, and location of each.
No trees or shrubs are planned as part of revegetation. The original Soil Conservation Service
recommendations called for seeding of specified grass species.
15. In accordance with Rule 6.4.5(2)(f)(v), please specify the anticipated minimum depth or range of depths for
those areas where topsoil will be replaced. The Operator listed an average 6 inches of topsoil under the
replacement of topsoil task within the supplied reclamation costs.
The reclamation plan in the original permit indicated topsoil replacement would be approximately 6"
in depth. Notes in the cost estimate provided for pit expansion indicate that approximately 6"
replacement is anticipated, but final depth will be dependent on the actual amount stockpiled.
16. Please note that where the Operator states that "[there is no topsoil on the floor of the pit, it was in that
condition in 1986, and that area will be seeded, but no topsoil replaced during reclamation]" is not acceptable
to the Division. The Division does not believe an area without any topsoil replacement will achieve the final
post -mining land use of a dryland pasture. Additionally, the original permit's approved Mining and
Reclamation Plans called for the salvage of 12 inches of topsoil on the area on top of the slope and the
replacement of 6 inches throughout the permit during reclamation. If this amount of topsoil was not stripped
during the current operation, the Operator may wish to propose to strip more "plant -growth medium" from a
particular area to account for areas within the site lacking topsoil so there is an average/equal amount of
replacement throughout the site (please note that any existing non -mining roads and the access road would not
need to be topsoiled/reclaimed and should be shown on the reclamation plan map).
Since no topsoil was available from the original pit floor, the amount available for final reclamation
may not allow a total of 6". All available stockpiled topsoil will be applied across the entire disturbed
areas, to include the floor.
