The process of "sounding" is performed by using a 5 foot long solid steel bar and striking <br />mine wall to detect loose rock, a hollow sound return is an indicator of a cavity existing behind <br />the rock face. After detecting loose rock a pry bar is used to bring it down and it is then collected <br />and removed. <br />16. Current status of The Queen Elizabeth Mine <br />The lower portal is 400 feet of tunnel that is dry and well ventilated. There are no collapses and <br />the mine floor is clear. <br />
