October 15, 2014 C- 1981 - 010 /Trapper Mine JLE
impoundments that receive run -off from these parcels were observed and are discussed in the Hydrologic Balance
section of this report.
Parcel A -C -05 is 7.01 acres in size. DRMS had previously evaluated this parcel for topsoil depth during an
inspection conducted on October 11, 2005. The Division found this parcel to have about 14 inches of topsoil
placed on it. It appears the dominant species established is Artemisia tridentata; Big Sagebrush. An understory
of grass and forbs has also established. The dominant perennial grass species established was likely Festuca
ovina; Sheep Fescue. A small area at the southern end of the parcel near the haul road had a fairly dense stand of
Bromus tectorum; Cheatgrass established. The forb species observed was Astragalus ccer, Cicer Milkvetch and
Achillea millefolium, Western Yarrow. This area blends in well with the surrounding vegetation and cattle were
actively grazing in the parcel during the inspection. Bare areas were not observed on this parcel. Overall, it
appears vegetation has established in this area to support the post mine land use. Rills and gullies were not
observed on this parcel.
Parcel A -B -10 is 83.5 acres in size. The Division evaluated the topsoil replacement depth on this parcel during the
August 15, 2013 inspection and the average topsoil depth observed was 11.75 inches. A very dense stand of
grasses and forbs have established and bare areas were not observed. The dominant perennial grasses observed
where Wheatgrasses (Agropyron spp.). Other perennial grass species observed where Poa pratensis; Kentucky
bluegrass, and Elymus cinereus, Basin Wildrye. The forb species observed were Western Yarrow, Cicer
Milkvetch, and Medicago sativa; Alfalfa. Chrysothamnus nauseosus, Rubber Rabbitbrush was observed
throughout the parcel. Carduus nutans; Musk Thistle or Cirsium vulgare; Bull Thistle was observed at several
locations in this parcel, but dense patches have not established. Trapper should continue to monitor this parcel for
noxious weeds and treat them as necessary. Overall, it appears vegetation has established in this area to support
the post mine land use. Several small rills were observed within this parcel, but they were not great in number and
have stabilized with vegetation cover. Erosion gullies were not observed.
Parcel A -B -09 is 9.2 acres in size. The Division had previously evaluated the topsoil replacement depth on this
parcel during the August 15, 2013 inspection. At that time, the Division measured one hole on this parcel and
found the replacement depth to be about 9 inches. This is one inch less than the minimum depth required. Given
this, two additional holes were dug using a hand shovel to evaluate topsoil replacement depth on this parcel. A
depth of 12 inches was observed and a depth of 16 inches was observed. It appears topsoil has been replaced at
the required depth for this parcel. The dominant perennial grass' observed on this parcel appeared to be Kentucky
Bluegrass, Basin Wildrye and Wheatgrass. The forbs observed were Western Yarrow, Cicer Milkvetch and
Alfalfa. Overall, it appears vegetation has established in this area to support the post mine land use. Bare areas
were not observed. Rills and gullies were not observed on this site.
The 2.6 acre portion of parcels Z -A -08 and the 2.1 acre portion of parcel Z -A -07 were observed. Parcel Z -A -07 is
comprised of a shrub clump (SC- 7 -07). The Z -A -08 parcel had a dense stand of grass established. The perennial
grass species observed was Basin Wildrye and Wheatgrasses. Western yarrow was observed throughout the
parcels. This portion of parcel Z -A -07 had several shrub species transplanted within it. Symphoricarpos
oreophilus; Mountain Snowberry and Amelanchier alnifolia, Saskatoon serviceberry were observed within the
shrub clump. A dense stand of Kentucky bluegrass was observed between the transplanted shrubs.
