X11
clumps are counted, averages 65 live stems per clump.
To improve and enhance wildlife habitat on reclaimed lands, NECC proposes to
establish shrub clumps on the reclaimed lands. Over 30 years of coal mine
reclamation in Colorado has resulted in successful techniques concerning re-
establishing shrubs on reclaimed areas. NECC believes that it is prudent to use
these techniques, to not only establish wildlife habitat, but to ensure the greatest
chance of successful reclamation results. The shrub establishment plan shall
include the following components:
Shrub Clump Size
Each shrub clump will be 100 feet square or 10,000 square feet in area.
Shrub Clump Locations
Two (2) shrub clumps will be established on the RDA final surface.
Referring to Figure 6, one RDA clump will be positioned at N8,750,
E114,300 and one clump at N9,250, E113,100. In the event the RDA is
reclaimed prior to constructing the RDA to its final design size, two clumps
will be established on the reclaimed surface, spaced at a sufficient distance
from the other and from the undisturbed areas so that the clumps are
serving the greater reclaimed area. Two (2) clumps will be established in
the East Portal facility area, with locations to be field - determined
considering permanent roads, the river, and the topography of the final
reclaimed area. One clump will be established at the location of the prep
plant and pond 6. In this clump, plains cottonwood will replace juniper and
pinion pine due to the riparian nature of this area. One clump will be
established near the DWDA #3 at the West Mine, the location to be selected
based on the final construction of DWDA #3 and permanent roads.
Orientation
Shrub clumps will be square with a NW, NE, SW, and SE corner. This
orientation is important when coupled with the species and planting
arrangements discussed below.
Species
The species to be used are Ponderosa pine, Pinion pine, Utah juniper,
Mountain mahogany, Skunkbush sumac, Western snowberry, and Plains
cottonwood (pond 6 area).
Planting Arrangement
In general, large species will be located on the north and west boundaries of
Section 2.05 TR -68 3/21/2014
