October 2001 -9- 003-2182.004
2.4 Soil Liner Fill
Based on neat-line survey, Ames placed and compacted approximately 6,075 cubic yards of
Soil Liner Fill on the External Pond foundation. Record Drawing No. 2 in Appendix A shows
the top of Soil Liner Fill As-Built.
Ames processed the Soil Liner Fill for the External Pond, beginning in February 2001 and
finishing in May 2001. Ames screened the borrow material through a 2-inch rotary screen to
remove oversized material from the Soil Liner Fill.
Ames began placing Soil Liner Fill in the External Pond in May 2001, and completed Soil Liner
Fill placement in September 2001. Soil Liner Fill was compacted to a minimum thickness of
12 inches by a smooth-drum vibratory compactor. Golder observed Soil Liner Fill depth
verification tests performed by Ames to confirm appropriate fill depth. Any areas that were
found to be deficient in thickness were reworked and retested until the area met specifications.
The Soil Liner Fill depth verification is discussed in Section 4.2.3.3. Soil Liner Fill was
moisture-conditioned and compacted as needed to meet project specifications. The minimum
Soil Liner Fill density was 95 percent of the maximum dry density at 3 percent dry of optimum
to optimum moisture content as determined by standard Proctor tests performed by Golder.
Areas of Soil Liner Fill, which initially failed to meet the density requirement, were moisture-
conditioned if necessary and re-compacted to achieve the required compaction.
Prior to geomembrane deployment on the Soil Liner Fill, Ames proof-rolled, compacted, and
hand-worked the fill surface to be free of desiccation cracks and abrupt grade changes. Golder
then inspected the surface. Sharp stones were removed. Locally,Ames placed fines stockpiled
from the Cameron tailings to smooth the fill surface in areas that were observed to be rough.
Golder approved the fill surface prior to release to Poly-Flex. Poly-Flex provided formal
subgrade approval prior to geomembrane deployment. Poly-Flex's subgrade acceptance forms
are presented in Appendix F.
I\00\2182\EXTEMAL POND"TTINAL DOC Golder Associates
