l
Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
. It
A Joint Venture • ANGLOGOLD ASHANTI (COLORADO) CORP., Manager
Operations Office
®
P.O. Box 191 - 100 North 3rd Street
Victor, Colorado 80860
- s
(719) 689 -2977 — Fax (719) 689 -3254
July 12, 2012
Mrs. Janet Kunz
386 E. 60 South
Ivins, TTtah 8473 8
Dear Mrs. Kunz,
In his letter dated May 7, 2012, Ron Largent indicated that the staff at CC &V would look one
final time into the possibility of recovering the remains of your son, Wayne Tease, from the
Mary McKinney mine shaft.
In the course of our review and consideration, we spoke with several people who were involved
in the recovery efforts in 1986 and who recall the events. Those who we contacted were in the
following positions at the time of the incident:
• Cripple Creek Police Chief — he was apparently the first official to be contacted about the
incident by your son's friend, and the first responder to the site
• Teller County Sheriff— was intimately involved in the incident
• State of Colorado Abandoned Mine Land — No records regarding this incident
• Mine Manager and other mine employees
• Contractors who were on the site and involved in the recovery efforts
• Local miners who attempted to reach the body from other underground workings
• Mining engineers — see the attached letter
All of these individuals discussed the large scope of the recovery efforts at the time, their
concern for the family and the concern for the safety of those involved in the recovery efforts.
They also all indicated that the shaft and associated mine workings were too unstable and
dangerous for any access. Even though attempts were made, the nature of the mining shafts in
the area prohibited access from other underground mine workings. It was also determined at the
time that sinking any new shafts to attempt further recovery efforts was not feasible. Your
information that the Mary McKinney shaft was partially backfilled was also confirmed.
Further, our engineering group confirmed the nearly quarter mile depth of the shaft, and could
find no feasible and safe method to reach the bottom given the age, location and depth of the
shaft.
G
