bullshit. This could have happened to anybody, and has before_ CCV is making it look like
Wayne had his accident ig today's time of strong tall fences and warning signs, but these
safety tools were simply not in place at the time. It is my hope someone can come forward
with a photograph proving this_ If I had one, I would send it to you_ Do you suppose the
Gazette Telegraph Cm Colorado Springs) published a photo of the shaft at the time they
did the story? It might support your cause if you can find a photo_ The newspaper's
archives are at both the newspaper and the Pikes Peak Library in Colorado Springs.
At the very least, I would hope that CCV agrees to dig down and retrieve Wayne's body.
If you have been up to the American Eagle's Mine, located just a mile or so away, you can
see where mining endeavors have managed to dig thousands of feet far below the surface.
With gold at it's current price, the cost of doing your family this honor would be minimal
to a company like CCV. This might be a good avenue to take for you and your family, as
everyone around here knows that CCV does everything they can to appear like a good
neighbor to the community.
Another thing you might warn to know about CCV: They are owned by AngloGold
Ashanti of South Africa, and this mine is currently rently their only North American operation. If
you Google AngloGold long enough, you will find information on what they have done in
other countries regarding the mistreatment of their employees and even burning homes
and villages when citizens object to what the mine is doing to their communities and their
people. It is my opinion that this company only behaves better here in America because we
have more stringent laws and capitol punishment.
Another suggestion I have for you is to contact Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper.
Mr. Hickenlooper is a former mayor of Denver_ On the occasions I have met him, he
seems like "one of us" - a man who is very family oriented, respectful of our communities,
and on the side of the common citizen_ With the publicity your situation is currently
receiving, now is an excellent time to solicit Governor Hickenlooper's support. I also
suggest contacting Dr. Thomas J. Noel. He is Colorado's recognized state historian, and
his voice carries a long way. The fact that Wayne is located at an historic site which is
being degraded by modern mining efforts will certainly peak his interest, and I am sure he
has already heard or read about the situation. Both Governor Hickenlooper and Dr. Noel
are in Denver and easy to find.
Most unfortunately, I am a public figure in this area and part of my job is being forced to
deal with CCV on a friendly basis. For that reason I cannot sign my name to this letter at
this time. I truly wish I could and it pains me that I cannot. But please know that I do feel
for your family during this trying time, and I hope you can win this battle.
