August 27,2013 C-1992-080/Carbon Junction Mine MLT
Mine. It appears that the bottom of the drainage may have been used for vehicular access at
some point, but the oak brush and other vegetation is beginning to mature, and now prohibits
access by motorized vehicles.
• No changes (headcutting or otherwise) to the Upper Carbon Channel were observed as a
result of the diversion berm's having been breached in 2012.
• The channel at the foot of the reclaimed North Pit slope is well-vegetated, and appears to be
extremely stable. A narrow channel has formed in the floor of the drainage, which likely
carries the normal flows (Photo 5).
REVEGETATION
• The spring and early summer months were dry in Durango, but the area did receive more
than five inches of rainfall in July and August. Vegetation on the reclaimed North Pit slopes,
which are south-facing, appeared somewhat parched (Photo 6),but within the drainages and
on the flatter surfaces, warm season grasses and annual weeds were fluorishing.
• At the location where the temporary diversion berm was breached in 2012, willows were
abundant (Photo 7). It appears that there may be a natural spring at that location, which
provides a more constant source of moisture.
• Within the"natural" Carbon Junction channel, which parallels the "diverted" channel, we
observed a wide variety of desirable vegetation (Photo 8), including: young pinon pine,
young plains cottonwood, box elder, large Indian paintbrush, Rocky Mountain beeplant, and
grasses.
• On the fan of sediment below the erosional gully, vegetation consists almost exclusively of
annual weeds. Numerous large thistle rosettes have appeared in the area disturbed by the
breaching of the berm in 2012. A few solitary Tamarisk plants have become established in
the channel.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 2
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 0 Page 3 of 8
