Data Collection
The data necessary for determining livestock consumptive use for a basin include:
• cattle, sheep, and hog population estimates, and
• representative per capita consumptive use for each type of livestock.
State estimates of cattle, sheep, and hog populations by county are developed every five
years and provided to the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The most current
livestock population estimates are for 1997. Livestock count, as well as other
information, are contained in files by county.
