.

2208 sites and trails, stage coach and toll road locations, an~ the spec-

tacular narrow gauge Denver and Rio Grande rtailroad. The entire area

to be inundated, .including West "lk Creel" Sapinero Creek, and espec-

ially Lake Fork of the Gunnison has many valuable links with the past.

A historic reconnaissance in this area should include mapping and

aerial photographing . . .

"The information given for the proceeding reser-

voir area is also applicable to ~Gateview~ Cebolla, and Curecanti

reservoirs, except that in the case. of the lattei7 there are a number

of village sites in the area to be inundated, including the village

of Cimarron and the mining sites (non extinct) along the Cimarron

River, that should definitely be mapped."

'.Iit:l reference to Taylor <'ark and AllIlont iieser-

voirs, "the writer knows this region only from having fished it and

to his knowledge there are few historical sites in the area other than

former ute camp sites and jJrospector and mining locations made during

the Gunnison mining era from lS70 to lS9l. It is suggested that both

these areas might warrant a local survey in order to ascertain lo-

cations not readily identifiable from available historic lIl9.terial."

6. Vehicle traffic in the vicinity of the reservoir

sites in Group B is comparatively light as indicated on tile 1946

Traffic Density Lap, Colorado, which shows a maximum. of 450 and a

minilnum. of 20 per day.

7. It will be necessary to relocate portions of U. S.

higrnvay 50 at Blue ~esa and Curecanti because portions of it traverse

these reservoir sites. A branch of the Denver arid dio Grande Western

Railroad narrow gauge line follows tile Gunnison rtiver through t.he can-

. yon where these two sites are located and it will require relocation.

24

..

.,

.

'.'

.\

'.
