.

2:i.!H

Sugarlollf Reservoir ~ is located in Lake County,

Colorado, about 6 miles northwest of Leadville, on state highway l04.

Turquoise Lake fDrmed by the impDundJnent of the Lake Fork of the Arkan-

sas River is located within the site. and is believed to be owned by the

Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. The proposed dam will be located

approximately .5 miles below the existing dam. A pool approximately

4 miles long and 1.25 miles wide at its widest point will be created.

The dam will raise the water surface elevation from the existing ele-

vation of 9,788 feet (top Df present spillway) to 9,880 feet (proposed

normal water level).

Water regulation and power are the purposes for which

the reservoir is to be used. The proposed water surface elevation,

with corresponding capacities and area acres of the various pools as

planned for the operation of the reservoir are shown on the attached

operations chart. Had the reservoir been in operation during the

period 1930-~941, there would have been some variations in water levels

frDm year tD year. It further shows that the water level would have

remained fairly stable during July and August with some drawdown

occurring during September of these years.

B. Retion

These two sites are located in rugged mountainous country

of outstanding scenic beauty where exceptional recreation opportunities

exist. Both sites are above 9,000 feet elevation and are in general,

surrounded by high, steep slopes covered ~ith evergreen and aapen.

The Twin Lakes site is outstanding in scenic beauty. Rising

from the reservoir is tit. Elbert, U.,431 feet, the highest point in

Colorado. Close by are Mt. Massive, 14,4lB feet, Mt. Harvard, 14,399

feet and LaPlatta Peak, 14,342 feet.

...

i'

"

.

'"

.

~.

16
