Further investigation of historical values in-

vo1ved in this group of reservoirs should be undertaken in accordance

with recommendations contained in Section Two - H of this report,

III. GENERAL DESCRIPTIOt: of AREA

A. ~posed Sites

Twin Lakes Reservoir site is located in Lake CDunty,

CDlorado, about 16 highway miles south of Leadville. An existing res-
ervoir is now located within the site. It was formed by the impound-

ment of Lake Creek, thus enlarging a natural lake to form two bodies of

water, known as '!Win LlIkes. This development is owned and operated by

private interests for irrigatiDn purposes. The site is reached frDm

Leadville by way of U. S. highway 24 to the south and thence west on

State highway 82 which skirts the north shore of the existing reser-

voir. The proposed dam will b e located approxiil-ate~ .4 miles below

the existing dam. A body of water approximate~ 5.5 miles long and 1..25

miles wide at its widest point will be created.

The proposed dam will raise the water level from the

present elevation of approximately 9,197 feet (top of present spill-

way) to 9,256 feet (proposed nDrmal water level.)

Water regulation and power are the purpose~ for which

the reservoir is to be used. The proposed water surface elevations,

. with corresponding capacities and area acres of the various pools as

planned for the opera~ion of the reservoir, are shown on the accom-

panying operations chart. A review of the proposed operation Df the

reservoir for the 12-year period 1930-1941, reveals that, although

there would have been some variation in levels from year to year, the

water level would have remained quite stable during the months of Ju~,

August and September when heaviest recreation use may be expected.

15
