I'.

;'

.,

.

.,

.'

~.

The Sugarloaf site, although not outstanding scenically, is

2i95
attractive.

The area should prove to be popular'due in part to its

proximity to Leadville. This community and its environs are histor-

ically significant from the standpoint of the gold rush and silver

mining days. The district, including the City of Leadville (elevation

10,152 feet, population 4,774) which was known in its riotous youth

as the "Uagic City", is said to be one of the most highly mineralized

areas in the world. ]here are many interesting and colorful stories

of life in that community from 1878 to 1880.

IV. FACTORS INFLU;;;JiCING RSCR.;ATIONAL DSVELOhJ.d.lT

The uppe~ portions of Twin Lakes and Sugarloaf Reservoir
sites lie within the boundaries of the San Isabel National Forest.

Forest Service camp grounds are within easy travel distance of the

Twin lakes site. The region surrounding these sites abounds in

scenery of outstanding rugged beauty and offers opportunities for

hiking, mountain climbing, horseback riding and nature study. Good

hunting and fishing are reported in the region. Winter sports areas

at Aspen, Glenwood Springs, Climax, Tennessee Pass, Cooper Hill and

other locations in the general vicinity are among the attractions of

the region.

The conununity of Leadville serves as a headquarters

and offers accommodations to winter sports enthusiasts.

The 1946 Traffic Density ;.iap, Colorado, shows that a daily
average of ll5 vehicles passed the Twin Lakes site on State highway
82, and 450 in the vicinity of the site on U. S. highway 24. 30 per
day were reported at the Sugarloaf site on State highway l04.

17
