When such purchases are made the water is

utilized by exchange, i.e., the reservoir water which is purchased

is released to the river to satisfy downstreMI senior users,

.

thus allowing a diversion of an equivalent amount directly from

.

the river. Transmission losses on such exchanges, if any, are

.

supposedly charged against them by the Water Commissioner, as
.directed by the State Engineer.

5. Fort Morgan Canal
The Fort Morgan Canal has its headgate on the south bank of

the South Platte River about three miles downstream from the town
of Goodrich. It runs along the south side of the river and througt
the city of Fort Morgan, irrigating land in the general vicinity

of Fort Morgan. It can partly be seen on U.S.G.S. Quadrangle

maps for the orchard, We1dona, and Fort Morgan Quadrangles. Part

of it lies in an umapped area south of Fort Morgan.

The Fort Morgan Canal is operated by the Fort Morgan Reservoi]

and Irrigation Company, a mutual non-profit water company. There

are 2,840 shares outstanding with 16 shares supposedly going with

each 80 acres of land. An owner of shares is entitled to take

water from the ditch in the ratio of 3 c/f/s for each 32 shares

owned. Contrary to the practice under some other systems, a share

.

in the company does not entitle the owner to a fixed amount of

water in acre-feet, to be delivered to him on demand.

The Board of Directors consists of Harry Bollinger, Carl

Johnson, Reuben Kaufman, Robert Kula, and John Amen. Amen is the

.

President; Ed Heidbrink is the Secretary and keeps all company

records; and, Lindy Crumbley is the Superintendent.

Farmers under the Fort Morgan Canal are entitled to take

WOODWARD_CLYDE.SHERARD AND ASSOCIATES
