<br /> <br />documents. For wetland classification, the standard document in use in the <br /> <br />... United States over the past two decades is Circular 39, Wetlands of the United <br /> <br />States, by Shaw and Fredine for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1956). The <br /> <br />o <br />.--, <br />t\) <br />~ <br />W <br />Ul <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />classification therein is designed for the entire country and is not specific <br />to the arid interior of the Intermountain Region. While contemplating the <br />release of a new multi-agency publication to replace Circular 39, we "tested" <br />the old circular in the field. When the new document, Classification of <br /> <br />Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States, coordinated and published <br /> <br />by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and edited by Cowardin, Golet, and LaRoe <br /> <br />(1979), was released, we examined its applicability, conceptually and in the <br /> <br />field, and concluded the earlier classification was more directly applicable to <br /> <br />the needs of the study. This was agreed to by the cooperating agencies, SCS <br /> <br />and DWR. <br /> <br />The literature in remote sensing applied to wetlands is burgeoning as <br /> <br />more attention is given to the techniques of remote sensing, and particularly <br /> <br />the advent of satellite staging. Some satellite investigations have been <br /> <br /> <br />pursued from manual and digital approaches (Anderson, et.al., 1973; Cowardian, et.al., <br /> <br />1973; Carter and Shubert, 1974; Bartlett, et.al., 1977; and others), but the more de- <br />finitive work is done with photography, especially color infrared photo interpretation <br />(Anderson; 1969; Seher'and Tueller, 1973; Enslin and Sullivan, 1974; and others). <br />Most applications have been in environments quite different from the Uinta <br />Basin. The technique ultimately developed in the present study is different from <br /> <br />those described in the current literature; and for the purpose, more diagnostic. <br />Utah State water documents reviewed included Consumptive Booklet, Utah <br />Division of Water Resources (August, 1980), and Uinta Hydrologic Area, Staff <br />Report No.7, Utah Division of Water Resources (September, 1971).
