.

.

"

concurrently with the operational water related land use inventory using

high altitude (U-2) color infrared photography.
,ilt is expected that the study will also serve NASA requirements
for practical applications by (1) improve the present techniques for
inventoring water related land use through the use of U-2 and Landsat
data which will then be extended to other basins of the State and (2)
helping to identify water use areas and assist in the water allocation

process."

Similar statements of objective are found in the ses contract, but with

more specific concern about wetland classification. For both agencies there is
a recognition of the more "proven" performance of U-2 eIR techniques, and the
more "experimental" application of ~andsat data. A "best-effort" agreement has
been the spirit of the study, with U-2 eIR providing the best assurance of
accuracy of interpretation, while pushing the limits of Landsat digital analysis
in hopes that techniques will be found to apply elsewhere in the state for
similarly needed data.
Within these constructs, the objective of the study is to classify and map
the water related land use and the wetlands of the Uinta Basin.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Three types of literature were surveyed in connection with the study __

wetland classification, remote sensing application to wetlands, and Utah water

-4-
