The Board subsequently authorized 50% funding for a

rescoping study on the proposed project. The study is now in the

process of being completed by Western Engineers Inc., a Grand

Junction consulting firm, and is the basis of the recommendations

on the project.

In the preparation of the rescoping study, the U.S. Bureau of

Reclamation's extensive studies and numerous reports on the San

i~iguel project were used, including the May, 1982 "planning

Report" which studied in depth over 20 alternative plans that

could irrigate acreages varying up to about 20,000 acres.

Proposed Project

The overall San Miguel project, as proposed would involve the

following:

(a) J & M Hughes Ditch Enlargement.
The J & M Hughes Ditch is an existing canal about 20 miles

long for which improvements and a general enlargement is

proposed. The proposed improvements will be directed towards

reducing the necessary annual maintenance and improving the

ability of the canal to divert and collect water. The initial

capacity of the proposed enlargement will be about 115 cfs, and it

is estimated that about 20,000 acre-feet of additional water can

be brought into the project via the Hughes ditch.

-3-
