squawfish. Flows at sampling were 4500-6000 cfs, about twice
normal. Only 40 YOY squawfish were collected (mean length =
33.1 mm), and another 7 juveniles (age 1, mean TL = 99.9 mm)
for a total of 47. In 1986, a total of 283 YOY squawfish
were collected (mean length = 41.6mm).

Few fish of any species were collected, and habitats were not
plentiful.

Reach 1:
Sampling dates were the same. Two ISMP-standard backwaters
were found in most five-mile sections between Colorado RM 110
and the confluence. All 22 primary seine hauls were counted
and identified to species or preserved for later analysis.

The Colorado River also peaked at an above average level,
about 40000 cfs, with flow remaining high all year. Flows
during sampling were 6500-7400 cfs, about 3-4000 higher than
normal. Only 1 squawfish was collected (TL = 36 rom); this was
the fewest YOY squawfish collected since ISMP sampling began
in 1987. In contrast, in 1996 a total of 826 YOY squawfish
(mean length = 40.3mm) were collected. This was the most CS
collected in this ISMP Reach and the first time the Colorado
River had out-produced the lower Green River. In general, few
fish were collected and the amount of available habitat was
low. Data is being electronically filed in a database and
will be submitted to the Program Data Manager in the near
future.

Table 3.
