<br />37 <br /> <br /> <br />000798 <br /> <br />cores, and cuttings have been required for wells drilled for oil <br />or gas, The reports now on file are consulted by engineers, <br />hydrologist, drillers, industries, and householders seeking <br />underground supplies of water, <br /> <br />g, State Board of Regents <br /> <br />The Board of Regents exercises general supervision <br />over the activities of the State University of Iowa and Iowa State <br />University of Science and Technology, <br /> <br />Iowa State University <br /> <br />Water and related land resource programs at this <br />land grant school are functions of the Agriculture and Home <br />Economics Experiment Station, Engineering Research Institute, <br />and the Cooperative Extension Service in Agriculture and Home <br />Economics. <br /> <br />Agriculture and Home Economics <br />Experiment Station <br /> <br />Authority: Agricultural research at Iowa <br />State traces its history to the beginning of the University in the <br />1860's when the original farm provided an opportunity for <br />experiments with livestock, crops and horticultural material. <br />The Hatch Act, passed by Congress in 1887, gave federal support <br />to agricultural investigations, and the formal beginning of the <br />Agriculture and Home Economies Experiment Station dates from <br />that time, Additional federal, state and private support has <br />enabled the Station to reach its present program of both basic <br />and applied research, <br /> <br />Organization: The Dean of Agriculture also <br />serves as Director of the Agriculture and Home Economics <br />Experiment Station, Much of the administrative responsibility is <br />delegated to the associate director and to assistant directors, <br />Research is conducted on the Iowa State University campus and <br />nearby facilities as well as at a number of outlying farms and in <br />fields of dozens of farmer cooperators throughout the state, <br />These experimental areas have been selected so that special <br />problems can be studied on a local basis, Cooperative work is <br />done with federal and state agencies and with other experiment <br />stations in the United States, <br />
