<br /> <br />Prol:!rams and Activities: Several hundred <br />projects are currently part of the research program, and cover <br />both basic and applied research, Most faculty members are <br />involved in the research program, and they have the assistance <br />of trained technicians and other supporting personneL In the <br />general area of soil and land, inclusive of water, watersheds, <br />river basins, air and climate (inclusive of resource conservation, <br />development and management) the station currently employs 13,1 <br />people, This is on a full-time equivalent basis, and actually <br />involves many more individuals since fractions of time and salary <br />are included, Among projects are: Erosion Control and Water <br />Conservation Investigations; Water Infiltration into Soils; Tillage <br />Requirements for Crop Growth, and Soil and Water Conservation, <br />and Their Relationship to Tillage Machinery; Quantative <br />Description of Watershed Parameters and Their Relationship to <br />Runoff; Effect of Alternative Land Use Systems Upon the Proper- <br />ties and Productivity of the Major Soils of Iowa; Vegetative <br />Reclamation of Iowa Coal-Strip-Mine Banks; Physical and <br />Economic Analysis of Watersheds as Related to Soil and Water <br />Conservation; Crop Yielding Capacity of Iowa Soil Types Under <br />Different Soil Management and Fertility Levels; The Statistical <br />and Economic Analysis for Long-Term (Rotational) Agronomic <br />Experiments; Surface drainage-fertility experiment on corn, <br />Davis County Experimental Farm; Tile drainage-fertility <br />experiment on corn, Davis County Experimental Farm; Water <br />table frequencies for tiled land; Tile hydraulics; Drainability <br />of Davis County alluvial soils; Measurements on Ankeny tile <br />spacing experiments; Study of gully growth relationships in <br />Steer and Thompson Creeks; Reservoir sedimentation; Model <br />study at Steer Creek gaging station; Water balance studies at <br />Castana Watersheds; Development of mathematical model <br />relating runoff and watershed parameters; Development of <br />runoff relationships for watershed with much storage (pothole <br />country); Study comparing measured and predicted storm runoff <br />from agricultural watersheds; and miscellaneous projects <br />related to land use and soil conservation, watershed develop- <br />ment, water rights, allocation and development. <br /> <br />Engineering Research Institute <br /> <br />Authority: The Engineering Research <br />Institute was established in 1904 as the research organization <br />within the College of Engineering at Iowa State University, <br /> <br />38 <br />
