Iowa Geological Survey <br /> <br />Authority: In general, the purpose of the Iowa <br />Geological Survey is to collect, study, interpret information on <br />geology, soils, timber, streams, mineral and other natural <br />resources and to make such data available, <br /> <br />Organization: The Geological Survey is under the <br />direction of the Geological Board composed of the Governor, <br />the State Auditor, and the Presidents of (l) the University of <br />Iowa, (2) Iowa State University, and (3) the Iowa Academy <br />of Science, The Board appoints the State Geologist who acts <br />as director of the survey, <br /> <br />Programs and Activities: Programs are geared to <br />locate, identify, measure and evaluate mineral resources and <br />geologic formations, Field parties are assigned to map areas <br />that may involve a county or quadrangle or a specific rock <br />formation such as limestone or sandstone formation, Samples <br />and cuttings are collected for chemical and mineralogical <br />analysis, Programs include mapping occurrence of bedrock <br />and glacial materials, coal and other mineral deposits and the <br />collection of driller's logs, geophysical logs and cores and <br />cuttings of wells drilled for water, oil or gas, The Survey <br />publishes many reports giving basic data on all phases of its <br />programs, and furnishes data and advice for water supplies <br />and the identification of occurrence of mineral resources and <br />geological formations, <br /> <br />Statewide stream flow records and records of ground <br />water levels are collected in coojieration with the U, S, <br />Geological Survey, Drilling records are collected and main- <br />tained on wells for water, oil or gas, For many years, <br />driller's logs and cuttings on water wells have been collected <br />through the voluntary cooperation of drillers, Since <br />enactment of the oil and gas conservation law in 1963, logs, <br /> <br />36 <br />
