.

.

Glen Canyon reservoir will yield approximately half of the

live storage for the entire Colorado River St~rage Project and more than

half of the power. Because ~f the heavy silt load carried by the Colorado

River at that point, Glen Canyon would be of tremend0us value in prolonging

the useful life of Lake Mead. It would also 'greatly increase the power

potentialities at any future dc:wnstream sites, such as Marble and Bridge

Canyon, by regulatin~ the fiver.
Ynu might ask--what are sore of the prC'J:;lems confronting the

states themselves?

,

Colorado has a number of p0tential irrigation projects and big

possibilities f0r industrial use of water within the natural basin. Also

two potential transbasin diversion projects eould provide water for the

South Platte and Arkansas Basins on the east sl0pe of the R"cky Mountains.

Under Colorado state policy within-basin uses are to receive first

consideration. However, the river regulation afforded by the Colorado

River Storage Project provides the transbasin projects their only

possibility of being assured of surplus water fer exportation.

Utah's potential ~ses within the natural basin ar8 small in

comparison with the large transbasin diversion for thc potential Central

Utah Project. The State can only approach full utilization of its

allocation of Colorado River water through this transbllsin diversiC'n.

~

New Mexic~, in order to utilize its share of Colorado River

" ,~
c .
"..)

water, must use the only major storage site on the San Juan River, the

~artinez site, near the Colorado-N~w Mexico State line for long-time

regulation. 'The San Juan River will supply the potential Shiprock Indian

Project, twe small projects and either a p~tential development on the

9
