Project Goal
The goal of the La Verkin Springs Unit is to remove approxi-
mately 103,000 tons of the 109,000 tons of salt, discharged to the
Virgin River waters by the La Verkin Springs, and thereby reduce
the salinity of the Colorado River. Plan formulation of the unit
investigation is in accordance with the Principles and Standards for
Planning Water and Related Land Resources in response to the Water
Resources Planning Act (P.L. 89-80) and as approved by the Water
Resources Council. Under Principles and Standards, project planning
takes into account National Economic Development (NED) and Environ-
mental Quality (EQ) objectives. Planning emphasis and project justifi-
cation are focused primarily on the EQ objective to protect the water
quality of the Colorado River. Reduction of the salinity is to be
achieved through the implementation of an alternative that meets the
Water and Power Resources Service (WPRS) tests for (1) acceptance,
(2) effectiveness, (3) efficiency, and (4) completeness as described
in this report.

2

0025['9
