among the three companies. Two of these companies divert water
upstream of La Verkin Springs. Under the agreement, approximately
2 ft3/s that would normally be diverted for irrigation use would be
made available to maintain instream flows.
B. Other Environmental Impacts
Construction of project features would modify the topographic
appearance of nearly 900 acres of undeveloped land within Washington
County. Over 850 acres would be used in the Purgatory Flat waste
disposal area as evaporation and storage ponds. Salt precipitation
and encrustation are expected to occur in about 148 acres of lined
ponds. A ground-water interception trench will minimize any pond
leakage to ground-water aquifers.
A permanent loss of 741 acres of desert vegetation would occur
due to physical structures and operation of the unit. Due to sparse
wildlife in the project area, animal losses would be minimal.
The energy requirements for the project are estimated to be
about 16,000 megawatt hours, equivalent to the annual energy
consumption of 1,670 homes.

.

002524

15
