t?:t,F'

"

~ '. ~ ,,") r ~
UG(;.)~ .

1,850,000 kilowatts assigned to supply preference 9ustomer loads in the

Eastern Missouri Basin area.

The 1,850,000 kilowatts is the amount of power the hydro system

can supply preference customers at time of annual peak loads. However,

during the winter months, there is not enough water to produce all the

energy required to serve that amount of firm load. Actually, in the

lowest water years, there will be insufficient water during the summer

months also.

This points up a problem faced by a hydro system in that the

water releases from the dams are greatest in the sU1lllller months when the

electric load is down, and the available water is limited in the winter

months when the electric requirements are maximum.

Under average water conditions, the federal hydro plants can

fully supply the month-by-month requirements of customers having a

combined peak load of only 1,200,000 kilowatts. In the worst water years,

the customers I load would be limited to 900,000 kilowatts.

In normal or better water years, the federal plants can produce

more energy than needed to supply customers having 1,850,000 kilowatts

of peak load. However, the energy will not be produced when required.

In the winter (non-navigation season), there will be a shortage of hydro

energy; and in the summer (navigation season), there will be a surplus.

Firming of Hydro

The local thermal systems propose to supp~ the government

sufficient thermal energy so its firm power sales from the hydro plants

can be increased to 1,850,000 kilowatts from the presently foreseen
limitations of 900,000 kilowatts under adverse water conditions and

1,200,000 kilowatts under average water conditions.

-2-
