.

.

.

1'''
W
a
vJ

1 mile of construction over the old alinement, as well as preserve the

natural scenic beauty of the Sand Hills.

Uncertainties

Any water salvaged by constructing a new lined reach of the

All-American Canal would be part of California's 4,400,000 acre-feet

per year apportionment. Representatives of the State of California

have expressed opposition to the permanent use of salvaged water for

reject stream replacement. It is their position that as water becomes

more scarce in the future the State may want to salvage that water

itself.

Cost

Original reconnaissance costs for constructing a new lined reach

between Pilot Knob and Drop 1 were developed in 1966 and have since
been indexed to January 1976 using canal indices in USBR Construction

Cost Trends to achieve the estimated investment cost of $35,720,000,
or an annual equivalent cost of $2,150,000 (see Table 2).

Benefits and costs do not include operation, maintenance, and

replacement costs, which have not been determined. Such costs for a

lined canal are usually less than for a comparable unlined canal. Any

savings in operation, maintenance, and replacement costs would

represent additional tangible benefits.

11
