N
~
~
N

Nevada - Authority for issuing NPDES permits was
delegated to the state. The State Division of Environ-
mental Protection has reissued most of the permits
previously issued by EPA.
Basic Management Industries are trying to eliminate
industrial waste water by evaporation in lined ponds and
delivery of the waste to those ponds by pipe. Permits
have been issued to two of the companies, which allow
discharge of relatively good quality cooling water and

to one company which allows discharge of surface storm
runoff.

A permit was also issued to tte Nevada Power Company
which is currently discharging brackish cooling water from
both the Clark and the Sunrise Generating Stations. Plans
to meet zero discharge by 1982 are being evaluated, which
involve evaporation of the brackish water with no return
to Las Vegas Wash.
NPDES permits have been issued to Clark County and
the City of Las Vegas. A program is being developed to
coordinate, investigate, and encourage the implementation
of management practices resulting in reduction of waste-
water salinity from those entities.
The first phase of the program, currently underway,
will develop a public education program on salinity con-
trol and optimum use of water softeners.

-24-
