They allow people to
study different alternative courses of action and judge them on their expected
merits and consequences before having to make an actual choice or decision,

The main concept of DSS is a software application which consists of three
iniegrated components:

. status and physical characteristic data via data base management,

. simulation/optimization modeling. and

. plan evaluation methods.

In a DSS these three components are integrated into a single software
application. The integrated environment allows users to efficiently study and
analyze the data representing the problem under question, apply simulation
models to the problem which compute the probable effects of various
simulated policy alternatives, and study and compare these alternatives relative
to one or more sets of decision criteria.

DSS's major contribution to the management of environmental resources is the
provision of a dynamic, efficient, and effective common information base for
understanding and solving the problems at hand, The following characteristics
of DSS serve this purpose:

. unambiguous treatment of data and information.

. efficient and effective visualization of information,

. data-analysis techniques allowing the full use of all available
information,

. formal techniques for plan evaluation.

. rapid evaluations of proposed POllCY alternatives, and' .

[MAP Compliance

Decision Support
Systems

DSS Benefits

DAMES& MOORE/CADSWES-IO
