I
~

e

e

003G2~

. dynamic monitoring of a system's state and updating of relevant
information.

The CRDSS is meant to introduce these benefits into the context of managing
the Colorado River water resources as to maximize the benefits for the state of
Colorado and its water users.

Methodology

Tasks I through 9 were conducted using a problem-centered design approach.
This methodology employs extensive scenario development and cognitive
walk-through procedures for the conceptual design of computer based
modeling and information systems, The methodology is based on an iterative
process conducted by system developers and potential users which converges
rapidly toward a detailed, well documented conceptual design (or designs) of a
system.

The methodology begins with a series of "brainstorming" sessions involving
potential sysIem users, The purpose of these sessions is to identify and "walk-
through" typical problems that users encounter in their daily work and practice,

After the initial list of problems is compiled. problem descriptions are
reviewed by the sponsoring organization to ensure that the problem
descriptions are representative and correct. Problem descriptions are then
refined by walking-through them until they are considered sufficiently accurate
to serve as system design guidelines.

From the problem descriptions, a definition of system needs is created (Task I).
This set of needs is then used throughout the remainder of the design and
development process as the touchstone against which all of a system's
components (functions. user interfaces. models, data. etc.) can be evaluated,

Problem Centered
Design

DAMES&MOORE/CADSWES-ll
