Riverside pumping plant

.~ The computed shortaoe fur the 22,909-acre service a.reH. of t.he
Riverside system a\'erag~s 35,500 fi.cre-feet per year. In un efI'ol.t to
improve t.his critical wuter supply '::jit,lLation, tne Colorn,do Wllter
CODSerHl.t.lOn Board requested that n supplementR.) wat€'r plan Cor
this system be developed. II
A 5-unit pumping plnllt, (~onnected directlv to the riyer outlet,
could be constructed below the Narrows Dam to providp. supplemental
water for the Riverside irrigation system. The tot.Rl dynamic. head
would be 120 feet and the cflpacity of the plant would be J 50 cubic
feet per .econd, A 54-ineh, 4,750-foot-long discharge line would follow
the downstream toe uf the dam, cruss o\'er the spillway chute, and
disc.harge into the existing Ri\"erside Canal nellr the lert. u.but.ment of
NarrO\'\r"s Dam. The discharge line \\'ould be constructed of rcin(orred
concrete except for ll. steel section which \\-'ould extend ucrn"s the ~plll-
way. A surge tank would be required near the middJe llr t.he disC'hllrge
line. Addition of this pumping pln.nt to the unit would require some
modifications at the discharge end of the ch"er outlet works. Power
would be provided by a 3.75-mile, 115-kiloyolt t.fallsmissionline from
lhe existin~ USBR Greeley-Fort Morgan ll5-kilovolt line and" sub-
station in the vicinity of N nrr0'I,,'S Dam site,
~\ By adding this feature, fin Ryerage of Rbout 17,000 ucre-feeL of
supplement.ul water could be pnmped tl) the Riverside cR.oaJ Illlnua.lly.
This pumpn.ge would enable the service area to be increased. from
22,909 acres to approximately 27,000 ucres, and the impro\'ement of
the waler .upply would be frum 75,5 percent to 86.2 percent of the
c.ompulf.d requirement.. I J .
The Riyerside service n.rea is not included in the Lower South Platte
Wtl.ter Conservancy District.
Reservoir bond t.he Bijou CR.nu.l. Such an arraogement is possible sincs
the Bijou diversion facilities are upstream from t.he reservoir.
Approximately 18,000 IIcre-feet per year could be excbanged to
the ~ijou syst.em, thlls providiD~ ~3.5 perceut of tne theoretical
reqUIrement. to tbe 33,900 a.ctes of Ifngable land served by the system.
These lands are not" part of the Lower South Platte Water Con-
servancy District.
~uid weU field

A field of eight wells located about 5 miles west of JuIesburg, Cola"
('ould be constructed to provide supplemental water for the Julesburg
Irrigation District. The wells would be constructed in two ro\....s oC
four wells each, The roWS would be one-h'alf mile apart, and tbe
wells within the rows would be spaced at 1,OOO~Coot inter~als.
Tbe depths of the welIs would average approxim"tely 180 feel"
!ind their casings, constructed of beavyweight mo.terial, would be
18 inches in diame.ter. The pumps would be set at an average depth
of l6D feet, a.nd would be driven by 40-horsepower electric motors.
Water from the weUs would he collected and conveyed to the Peterso-ri .
CUDal in precast concrete pipelines.
Yields ayeraging .bout, ,1 ,800 gallons per minute or 4 eu bie foot
per second, could probably be obtained from e"ch weli. Total pumpage
during tbe 4-month irrigation season, June through Sept.ember. would
be approximately 7,700 "cre-feet,
Through the development of this well field, gre"'er use couId be
made of the ground-water supplies ll.vu.ilable in the lower part of the
has;n, Howe,-er, further study would be required t.o determine the
probn.ble effects ou ~urface supplies for ditches that di \'ert in Nebraska.
Bijoll Creek diversion channel

The 19,51 plan for the Narrows \illi, inc.luded provisions for the
diverslon of Bijou Creek into tbe Narrows Reservoir for lIood control.
This potentiolity was again tUlalyzed following the flood of June 1965,
Howe\"er, residents of the Biiou VaHey are mterested also in upstream
control and flood protect-ion if this alternative is at. all possible. The
Corps of Engineers currently is studying the fessibilitv of such con-
trol; the Soil Conservation Service is also conducting a. conCUrrent
study, In the event th"t the cooperating agencies and the State of
Colorado complete their findings without. fOnTIlI.]ating a. more economi-
cal alternative plM for cOnLrol of Bijou floods in the South Platte
River Valley, tbe faeilities to divert Bljou Creek into Narrows Re.er-
voir could be constructed fl.t any time to be complementary to up-
streulll works. No change would be required in the design of Narrows
Da.~; hO\yever, the allocatioll of reservoir stora~e would req uire min or
modlficatwns to compensate for the adde.d sedJrnent which would be
c"rried into tbe reservoir from Bijou Creek.
A ]..lotential channel, as studied III 1965, would intercept Bijou Creek
s\,uth. of tbe N arrows Reservoir a.~d woul~ extend in a nortbeasterly
directIOn for about. 30,000 feet to discharge mto tbe reservoir, It would
