<br />, <br /> <br />" <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />o <br />~ <br />w <br />w <br /> <br />values that might have been foregone as a result of the con- <br /> <br />struction of salinity control unitso The legislation further <br /> <br />authorizes a program to be carried out by the Secretary of <br /> <br />Agriculture for onfarm irrigation improvements so that sali- <br /> <br />nity returning from agricultural practices can be reduced. <br /> <br />The agriculture portion of the legislation calls for the <br />expenditure of approximately $200,000,000 over the next seven <br /> <br />fiscal years and allows for a portion of the costs to be paid <br /> <br />for by the Lower Colorado River Basin Development Fund and <br />the Upper Colorado River Basin Fund. <br /> <br />On June 20, the Subcommittee on Water & Power of the <br /> <br />Energy and Natural Resources Committee chaired by Senator <br /> <br />Murkowski of Alaska held a hearing on S. 2202. The Executive <br /> <br /> <br />Director of the Forum testified, as did the State of Colorado <br /> <br />and the State of Cali forn i a. <br /> <br />Addi tional testimony was <br /> <br />received from the Department of the Interior, the Department <br /> <br />of Agriculture, State Department, and EPA. The federal agen- <br /> <br />cies were asked to prepare a legislative report which has not <br /> <br />yet been received. <br /> <br />On April 6, H.R. 6097 was introduced into the House of <br /> <br />Representati ves by Representative Kogovsek of Colorado, Re- <br /> <br />presentative Brown of Colorado, Representative Coelho of <br /> <br />California, Representative Lewis of California, Representa- <br /> <br />tive Santini of Nevada, Representative Clausen of California, <br /> <br />Representati ve Cheney of Wyoming, Representative Chappie of <br /> <br />California, Representative Thomas of California, Representa- <br /> <br />-43- <br />
