<br />2 <br /> <br />26 MISSION OF GCMRC <br />27 <br />28 The GCPA and GCDEIS direct the Secretary of Interior, ''to establish and implement <br />29 lorig-term monitoring programs and activities that will ensure that Glen Canyon Dam is <br />30 operated in a manner consistent with that of Section 1802" of the GCPA. The mission of the <br />31 Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (GCMRC) is: <br />32 to develop and implement long-term monitoring and related research and other <br />33 scientific activities to determine "...the effect of the Secretary's actions..." on the <br />34 natural, recreational, and socio-cultural resources of the Colorado River ecosystem, as <br />35 well as other information needs specified by the AMWG utilizing an ecosystem <br />36 science approach.J <br />37 Long-term monitoring, research and the management of the information derived from <br />38 these activities will occur for resources of concern to determine changes in key resource <br />39 attributes. Research will be used to interpret and explain trends observed from monitoring, to <br />40 determine cause and effect relationships and to better define relationships between physical, <br />41 biological and socio-cultural processes. <br />42 In addition to monitoring and research activities, the GCMRC will develop <br />43 information technologies to assure information archiving and transfer to managers and <br />44 stakeholders and science organizations. Specific protocols will be developed to ensure that <br />45 sensitive information, such as location of endangered species and cultural resource sites, are <br />46 maintained in confidence. <br />47 <br />48 STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT OBJECTIVES <br />49 AND PRIORITIZED INFORMATION NEEDS <br />50 The basis for the monitoring and research programs described in this Strategic Plan <br />51 are management objectives and prioritized information needs approved by the AMWG for <br />52 the Colorado River ecosystem.
