the initiation of some salinity control activities. The

w
CJ1
00
c.o

Bureau estimates that, potentially, salinity control on
public lands in the Basin could reduce the salinity of
Colorado River by about 150,000 tons per year (15 mg/l)

at Imperial Dam. The Bureau manages the public lands
according to the multiple use concept and to date, salinity
control has not been considered to be a significant problem
compared to others faced by the Bureau. The BLM 1978-79

Status Report identifies Salt Creek, Colorado, as a potential
salinity control project which is technically and economically
feasible and cost-effective.

BLM should include salinity control as a long-term
objective. BLM should increase the personnel in state
offices (Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming) to provide technical
assistance in project development. Further, the agency
should request funding for demonstration projects utilizing
current knowledge gained regarding salinity management on
grazing lands. The September 9, 1980 letter from Frank
Gregg to the Forum was non-committal and further underscores
the lack of commitment to salinity control by top level BLM officials.

The Council urges that BLMtake an aggressive position
with regard to salinity control. BLM should concentrate its
efforts in fiscal year 1982 on: (1) implementing detailed
planning necessary to construct feasible projects at selected
sites; (2) continuing to monitor the quality of water emanating
from public rangelands - this program was initiated in 1976;

-10-

___'_'."_.,_~_~ '_'__U'_"

. ,,,.-.

""WV_ _ ,__ _"e._' .._

,-."-" ~ -----. .. -.

. - ,
