.
\,;,~-;'

.
~

There are flood flows that must be captured and quelled if rampant.

cloudburst floods. such as the June 1965 flood. are to be made a thing

of the past.

.
There is a site determined to be the best site where a dam can be

built at the lOwest cost commensurate with the benefits to be realized.

There has been complete agreement by all concerned that a dam

should be built on the lower South Platte River. But. for some ,years.

controversy prevailed on where that dam should be built. The many
studies and discussions culminated in a full airing of the questions

involved at a meeting of the Colorado Water Conservation Board held at

Ft. Morgan. Colorado. on September 11 and 12. 196~. At that meeting.

the Nax'rows site recommended by the Bureau of Reclamation was approved

by the State of Colorado through action by the Colorado Water

Conservation Board.

The site having been determined. what are the next steps to make

the Narrows Pam a reality?

The Narrows Unit was authorized in 19~6 as a part of the vast

Missouri River Basin Project. But. much time has passed since that

authorization., Many conditions have changed. Consequently. reauthor-

izetion;of the Narrows Unit with ,the Narrows Dam as the storage feature

must he sought from the Congress of the United States.

Authorization requires that a feasihility report he completed and

submitted to the' Congress. The Bureau of Reclamation is now pursuing

the feasibility studies on an aocelerated basis. The goal of the Bu~au

of Reclamation is to complete the feasibility report so that it oan be
submitted to the Cong~ss in 1966.

2
