The assessment will consider the competition of <br />the short- and long-range conservation, development, use and manage- <br />ment of the Nation's limited water and related land resources. <br /> <br />This assessment is being done in a manner to be of direct use to <br />the executive branch, the Congress, and Federal-State agencies in <br />helping to make better water-related implementation, planning, re- <br />search, and data-collection decisiDns. <br /> <br />The current phase Df assessment activities involves the development <br />of infDrmation that describes the major water problems in each region <br />as well as information which describes the State-RegiDnal Future. <br />In accordance with the United States Water Resources Council's guide- <br />lines the State-Regional Future contains the following information. <br /> <br />1. State Regional Desires and Objectives - Statements of broad <br />social, economic and environmental goals to which the <br />citizens of the region aspire. <br /> <br />2, Problem description - A description of the nature and rela- <br />tive severity of each water problem in the area according <br />to the United States Water Resources Council's guidelines <br />to focus on severe problems in critical need of resolution <br />considering economic, social, and environmental effects <br />for areas larger than a small stream reach, community, Dr <br />county. <br /> <br />3. Environmental Resources - A map display of important fea- <br />tures of the Regional environment, with supporting narrative. <br /> <br />4. Volumetric Requirements - A tabular summary of present and <br />future annual volumes of water used functiDnally in each <br />area for withdrawal and consumptive use from freshwater <br />sources, <br /> <br />5. Instream Flow Needs - A tabular summary of the annual volume <br />of instream flow needs at the principal point at which water <br />exits in each area. <br /> <br />6. Water Supplies - A tabular summary of available water <br />supplies. <br /> <br />7, Comparison of the State-Regional Future estimates with the <br />estimates from the Modified Central Case - A set of tabular <br />comparisons for each area of the State-Regional Future <br />estimates for socioeconomic characteristics, volumetric <br /> <br />171 <br /> <br />
