growth, environmental quality, and implementation of improved water-
use technologies. The assessment will consider the competition of
the short- and long-range conservation, development, use and manage-
ment of the Nation's limited water and related land resources.

This assessment is being done in a manner to be of direct use to
the executive branch, the Congress, and Federal-State agencies in
helping to make better water-related implementation, planning, re-
search, and data-collection decisiDns.

The current phase Df assessment activities involves the development
of infDrmation that describes the major water problems in each region
as well as information which describes the State-RegiDnal Future.
In accordance with the United States Water Resources Council's guide-
lines the State-Regional Future contains the following information.

1. State Regional Desires and Objectives - Statements of broad
social, economic and environmental goals to which the
citizens of the region aspire.

2, Problem description - A description of the nature and rela-
tive severity of each water problem in the area according
to the United States Water Resources Council's guidelines
to focus on severe problems in critical need of resolution
considering economic, social, and environmental effects
for areas larger than a small stream reach, community, Dr

3. Environmental Resources - A map display of important fea-
tures of the Regional environment, with supporting narrative.

4. Volumetric Requirements - A tabular summary of present and
future annual volumes of water used functiDnally in each
area for withdrawal and consumptive use from freshwater
sources,

5. Instream Flow Needs - A tabular summary of the annual volume
of instream flow needs at the principal point at which water
exits in each area.

6. Water Supplies - A tabular summary of available water
supplies.

7, Comparison of the State-Regional Future estimates with the
estimates from the Modified Central Case - A set of tabular
comparisons for each area of the State-Regional Future
estimates for socioeconomic characteristics, volumetric
