THE HOOD FARM

The Colorado Water Conservation Board has completed its second year
at the Hood Fann. r'lost of the work has centered around improvement and
modification of the float gates.

- ,

The North field of this farm is a boarder irrigation setup on five
year old Jose Wheatgrass. Three boarders are irrigated at once by time
release gates (A.R.S.) which fall at predetermined intervals and back
the water up to trigger a pair of float gates. Irrigation sets are
made while Mr. Hood is at work in town and a field that once took twelve
days to irrigate now takes two and one half days.

As the season progressed \'1e began to have more frequent trouble wi th
the float gates. The problem seemed to be that the aluminum latches
began to weather and they would hang up so that the gates wouldn't fall.
Hany different kinds of latches were tried and discarded. Finally.
Mr. Stephen Mashl produced a gate that has operated without fail. We
have ordered this modification to all of the gates and will give them a
season's try next year.

1608

-
