-2-

The other ditches on this farm are level section furrow ported
concrete ditches which are also irrigated by drop closed timed gates
(A.R.S.). The cost of installing this kind of ditch system is about
S100 per acre. However, in order for the ditches to operate well, the
fields need to be leveled. Current leveling costs are running over
$100 per acre, depending on how much dirt is to be moved. This farm
represents the kind of system that we think ;s necessary for good water
management. Especially in this area where many farmers are ~mployed
away from their farms. The use of these time operated gates makes it
pOSSible for farmers to successfully operate an irrigation system while
working at some other job. It is our hope that when on-farm improvement
funds become available through the Colorado River Salinity Control
Program that many farmers will have the oportunity to install such
systems.

1697
