Establish a long-term Jnonitoring prograJn to assess tile< relatlOnghip
of Glen Canyon Dam (Glen Canyon) operation to the humpback chub.

/I..

Objective

:1"

1. Define monitoring criteria (from II Al and A2). snch as life stages
and habitats. sampling intensity, sampling procedures, and data to be
collected. Use information from the research study and other appropriate
studies to determine significance of change in population size, stability,
and general well being of the species and its habitat. Evaluate and revise
the monitoring program as necessary.

2. As significant information becomes available, and at least at five
year intervals coordinated with the review of the Colorado River Storage
Project, evaluate monitoring results to determine the necessity of
changing project operation so that it contributes to the likelihood fQr
recovery of the humpback chub in the project area. Use monitoring
information to determine the success of operational changes or other
measures to imprpve the status of the humpback chub in the Grand Canyon.
Reinitiate formal Section 7 consultation if monitoring information reveals
that project operation is likely to jeopardize the continued existence of
the humpback chub or if.new information reveals effects of. the action that
may affect listed species in a manner not previously con~idered.

!.
,.\
i'
r;:
~j

'""
:~
~~ i
~
~,
"
o

, ,
,;.-

3. Establish quantitative recovery goals for the humpback chub in the
Grand canyon.

.,'\

-1-.<:

1. The monitoring program needs to be long-term, if necessary the life
of the project, since there is a wide variance in precipitation. the
resultant reservoir releases, and changes in downstream environments from
those releases. Also, with the longevity of the species (40+ ycars) ,
short-term monitoring efforts may not accurately identify significant
trends. Where possible, cause and effect hypotheses will be tested and
compared to environmental or other changes that may affect the humpback
chub. Monitoring of other resources affected by Glen Canyon. such as
sediment and ~'ater quality, should be integrated wi th this effort.

B. During the last
year pf the humpback chub studies, a long term monitoring program will be
developed, reviewed. and implemented by the Consulting Team's agencies.

5
