Discussion

Recovery of the humpback chub will dep'!nd upon knowledge of the ways
previous perturbations have affected the species and how current and
proposed threats will affect various life stages. Understanding these
relationships is a prerequisite to recovery. Limited life' history
information is available for this species since it has been known to
scientists for only 40 years. However, a literature review to detefllline
existing documentation of the species' requireDlents will be conducted to
reduce the need.for unnecessary field studies.

Some determination of operational impacts may have to depend on an
analysis of the literature due to the inability to study large, remote
riverine systems. These determinations may require more limited
. iuvestigations using controlled flows in an experiluental design to support
those conclusions.

Studies for this conservation measure should complement the Glen
Envirolllllent Studies (GCES) to the extent possible with final
approval resting with the Fish and wildlife Service.

Canyon
study

C. 1iD,ing and Funding

The scope of work will ensure that information derived from these studies
will be available for planning during the various stages of GeES and will
be used to develop operational alternatives for Glen Canyon Dam.

<1
