Objecti ves

1. Determine spawning and rearing requirements for the humpback chub by
collecting data in the project area and from a review of other studies
over the species range.

2. Evaluate the availability of suitable habitat in the project area
using species requirements developed above and identify a priority list
of sites for this effort

J. If appropriate (based on IV Al and A2) I develop a reintroduction
program for the Mlected site(s) identifying the OPtimum size of fish,
rate of stocking, timing, and criteria for determining the success or
failure of this effort. Stocking or other management efforts and
monitoring will continue for five years at which time the Consultation
Team will recommend to the Service whether this effort sho1l1d be
continued.

B. Discussion

Spawning and rearing of early life stages of humpback chub appears to be
limited to the perennial. lower reach of the Little Colorado River due to
the operation of Glen Canyon Dam. EstabliShing other spawning and rearing
areas would reduce the dependency of the humpback chub on that one,
limited reach. BiOlogical and habitat data needed for this effort sbould
be available from studies identified in other conservation measures of
this biological opinion.

C. Time and Funding

The necessary studies should be conducted during Phase 2 of the Glen
Canyon Environmental Studies. The Service and Reclamation will evaluate
the reintroduction effort after five years to determine whether it should
continue.

Reclamation will fund this .effort.

6
