<br />..: -. <br /> <br />FY90 COST: $75,000 <br /> <br />PRIORITY 3 -- <br />Evaluation of the water-quality effects of specific water uses <br />and wastewater discharges in the Arkansas River basin. <br /> <br />. The influx of hundreds of thousands of visitors to the upper <br />Arkansas River basin each summer, the existence of numerous small <br />wastewater treatment plants, and future plans to construct about <br />20 new sanitation facilities adjacent to the Arkansas River <br />between Granite and Pueblo has raised concerns about the <br />potential effects on water quality in the upper basin. <br />similarly, the effects of elevated concentrations of nitrogen and <br />phosphorus discharged from wastewater treatment plants, and from <br />urban and agricultural runoff downstream from Pueblo has raised <br />concerns about effects on water quality in the lower basin. The <br />inflow of nutrient-enriched water to reservoirs in the basin <br />could accelerate eutrophication, reduce available storage, and <br />impair other water uses. <br /> <br />3 <br />
