<br />The objectives of PrioritY,3 are: 1) to evaluate the seasonal
<br />and downstream distribution of fecal coliform, total coliform,
<br />and fecal streptococcus bacteria in the Arkansas River basin: 2)
<br />to evaluate the seasonal and downstream variations in the
<br />concentrations and loads of nitrogen and phosphorus at selected
<br />points in the Arkansas River: 3) to assess the effects of
<br />extensive recreational use on water quality in the upper Arkansas
<br />River basin; and 4) to,make a preliminary evaluation of the
<br />effects on water quality from wastewater discharges in the basin.

<br />The additional water~quality and other hydrologic data needed to
<br />evaluate priority 4 -- Water-quality effects of operations of the
<br />existing water-supply system: Priority 5 -- water-quality effects
<br />of mine drainage and planned cleanup: and Priority 6 --
<br />Water-quality effects of new reservoirs upstream from Pueblo, are
<br />small because most of the data needed to evaluate these issues
<br />would be collected as part of Priorities 1 and 2. These
<br />additional data could generally be collected concurrently with
<br />data collected for Priorities 1 and 2, therefore, minimizing the
<br />costs associated with the data-collection component for
<br />priorities 4 through 6. .
