During the first phase of the study,
13 water-quality issues ware. identified and prioritized using
rankings provided by the eight cooperating agencies and the U.S. . ' I
Geological survey; available data were compiled and evaluated for
their adequacy to evaluate these water-quality issues; and a
comprehensive work plan for evaluating water quality in the
Arkansas River basin of Colorado was developed. .

The work plan includes a plan of study for the three highest
ranked water-quality issues, and a plan for collecting the
additional data needed to evaluate the next three highest ranked
water-quality issues.

The six highest ranked water-quality issues are:

Priority 1 Determination of existing water-quality conditions
and establishment of a consistent basin-wide
monitoring network

2 Water-quality effects of water exchanges and
transfers
3 Water-quality effects of specific water uses or
wastewater discharges
4 Water-quality effects of operations of the existing
water-supply system
5 Water-quality effects of mine drainage and planned
cleanup

6 Water-quality effects of new reservoirs upstream
from Pueblo

1
