Socio-Economic Characteristics and Primary Land Use

Socio-economic information, including population, employment, per capita'
income and electric energy production, are presented for each of the region's
11 ASA's, the state portions of each ASA, and as a region summary for the
years 1975, 1985 and 2000.

Primary land use information for the SRF is broken down into four major
categories--agricultural, mining, urban and transportation and other land.
That information, as well as total land area and total water surface area,
are displayed for the region, each ASA and state portion for 1975, 1985 and 2000.

Water Use and Requirements

This section of the SRF shows estimated 1975 water use and projected
water requirements for the years 1985 and 2000. Information is classified
in the following seven major functional categories:

* Municipal and Industrial (Central Systems)
* Rural Domestic
* Manufacturing (Self Supp1 ied)
* Mining
* Irrigation
* Livestock
* Steam Electric

Withdrawals and consumptive use are separately tabulated for the
regi on, the 11 ASA I S and state porti ons of ASA' s.

Instream Flow Needs

This section consists of two main parts. The first part addresses
instream functional uses, including the concept of beneficial use and problems
associated with the concept. Two functional uses, hydroelectric power
and navigation, are discussed in this part. The discussion on hydroelectric
power presents a tabulation of the basin's existing hydroelectric capacity
and the future role of hydroelectric power. The dIscussion of navigation
contains estimates of seasonal navigation water requirements, commerce asso-
ciated with the waterway and the future of navIgation on the Missouri River.

The final part of the instream flow needs section is a general discus- '
sion of institutional requirements in the Missouri Basin. The six interstate
compacts, two Supreme Court Decrees and one international treaty governing
the waters of the basin are described. This part also summarizes the basin's
existing and projected water imports and exports.

Water Supplies/Depletions Summary

This section contains tabulations by ASA of present modified flows,
imports, exports, depletions (upstream, intra-ASA consumption, and evaporation).
natural modified flows and future modified flows. Also estimated are ground '
water factors to account for effects on streamf10ws. All figures are rePorted
in thousand acre-feet (1,000 AF) per year and million gallons per day (MGD).

II-2

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I,

,

I
I
I
