and adopting standards. For example, any water body segment with
water quality standards that do not include the goal uses
specified in CWA ~ 101(a) (2) shall be re-examined every three
years to determine if any new information has become available.
If such new information indicates the CWA goal uses are
attainable, the Tribe shall revise.its standards accordingly.
Public hea~ings shall be held in accordance with U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. The proposed
water quality standards revisions and supporting analyses shall
be made available to the public prior to the hearing. The Tribe
shall submit the revised standards and any supporting analyses to
the EPA Regional Administrator for review and approval within 30
III DEFINITIONS

(A)

Acute Standard is the concentration of an element that
protects the biota in a water body from short term effects,
including lethality. An acute standard is implemented with a
specified duration and frequency of recurrence as defined in
section XIV.

(B)

Antidegradation is an element of the Tribe's water quality
standa~ds that is intended to maintain and protect existing
uses and the existing quality of high quality waters and
outstanding natural resource waters.

(C)

Best Management Practices (BMPs) are government and industry
recommended operating procedures effective at preventing or
reducing water pollution originating from nonpoint sources.

Biologipal Criteria, also known as biocriteria, are narrative
express~ons or numeric values of the biological
characteristics of aquatic communities based on appropriate
reference conditions. Biological criteria are intended to .
serve as an index of aquatic community health.

Chronic, Standard is the concentration of an element that
protect? the biota in a water bOdy from toxic effects that
include, but are not limited to, demonstrable abnormalities
and adverse effects on survival, growth or reproduction. A
chronic. standard is implemented with a specified duration and
frequenCY of recurrence as defined in Section XIV.

Cold Water Biota are aquatic life, including fish, that are
normally found in waters where the temperature does not often
exceed 200 C.
