A possible refinement
that Was not appraised for this plan would be the use of sprinkler systeres
for the lands on both sides of the low divide between the two streams.
'1'his would provide a more efficient use of the available water and in
turn an expansion of the unit lands. It is expected that a considerably
larger acreage of land would be classified as arable if the classifica-
tion were made with consideration given to the use of sprinkler systems.

Another possible enlargement of the previously described plan
includes storage on Fortification Creek and construction of two canals
to serve about 3,400 acres of irrigated and arable land near the mouth
of, and along, Fortification Creek. The enlargement would be a sepa~'ate
development and could operate independently of the described plan. Its
indicated benefit-cost ratio, however, is only about 0.7 to 1.

A larger plan that Was appraised and found to be econornicall:'
infeasible provides for use of surplus water from Elk River. TIlis plan
entails a conveyance system along the south slopes of the Elkhead Moun--
tains, a long siphon across the Fortification Creek Valle:i and canals
to distribute the water to arable lands located in the Little Snake
River drainage. The plan would include the lands of the previously
described plan and those ~Jong Por+.i,f'i.c",t3_on Creek.

40
