.

.

.

002338

CHAPTER III

PHO./ECT IEVELOPMENl'
(.Juniper unit)

Juniper Ilnit

The plan of development for the Juniper unit as tentatively appraised
in this report involves utilization of the Juniper Dam and Reservoir sites
on the Yampa River for a single-purpose irrigation development. TIle ap-
praisal, however, has been made primarily as a base for future studies of
hydroelectric power potentialities at the JlUliper and Cross MolUltain Dam
sites on the Yampa River. As additional studies are made, the plan will
no doubt be revised to include power production as a major project purpose.

The JlUliper lUli t as tentatively planned would serve 101,280 acres of
full service land, including 32,920 acres in Colorado and 68,560 acres in
Utah, and would incidentally aid in fish and wildlife conservation, recre-
ational development, and sediment control. The lands that would be served
lie along the Yampa River in the vicinity of Maybell, Colo., and in the
Deadman Bench area between the Yampa and White Rivers. TIle lUli t lands near
Maybell are situated on the north and south sides of the Yampa River west
of Juniper Canyon and within the basin of the Cross Mountain Reservoir, a
potential but as yet unauthorized un! t of the Colorado River Storage proJ-
ect. The Deadman Bench area includes lands situated along the DOI'thern
slopes of the White River Basin in COlOI'ado, on Deadman Bench proper in
utah, and between Deadman Bench and the White and Green Rivers.

Uni t plan

Water for the Juniper unit would be supplied pr~rily from the Yampa
River. Other water would be supplied from the lower White River and from
a return flow channel below Deadman Bench. Principal storage would be pro-
vided by the Juniper Reservoir which would be created by a dam on the
Yampa River. Releases from the reservoir would be made to the Deadman
Bench Canal which would extend west along the south side of the Yampa River
then south through a tunnel to the White River drainage, and west again to
. {
the Deadman Bench area. Two branch canals would divert water from the
Deadman Bench Canal. TIle Sunbeam Canal would divert at the end of Juniper
Canyon, about 2 miles below the head of the Deadr.1an Bench Canal. It would
cross the Yampa River by siphon and would serve lands situated along the
north side of the river. The Pinyon Canal would head near the outlet por-
tal of the tunnel to the White River drainage and would extend easterly to
serve lands situated along the west side of Pinyon Ridge. Water conveyed
in the Deadman Bench Canal in excess of immediate irrigation needs would
be released to the Artesia Regulating Reservoir that would be constructed
Just south of the town of Artesia, Colo., near the Colorado-utah border.
Water from the regulating reservoir would be released as needed through
a tunnel to the Artesia Canal which would extend westerly to serve lands
situated north of Deadman Bench.

TIle Wonsi ts Canal would be constructed to intercept return flows from
Deadman Bench and would extend westerly to serve lands lying below the
bench area. As the return flow from the bench area would be insufficient

41
