<br />, <br /> <br />E67 System. Lateral E67 Canal is the latest addition to the <br /> <br />District's irrigation system, having been completed in the <br /> <br /> <br />spring of 1954. It is 15 km in length and has 26 km of <br /> <br /> <br />distribution laterals carrying water to about 2380 ha in <br /> <br /> <br />Gasper County. <br /> <br />THE NEW FOR HlPROVEMENTS <br /> <br />Though the CNPPID facilities are comparable to others in the <br /> <br /> <br />region, the District became concerned about its abil~ty to <br /> <br />provide ~ater when and where needed, increased operational <br /> <br /> <br />costs, and drainage problems. In addition, increasing fuel <br /> <br /> <br />costs were making present and future power generation more <br /> <br />expensive. Beginning in about 1970, the District began a <br /> <br /> <br />series of actions intended to modernize their irrigation <br /> <br /> <br />facilities and bolster the electric facilities. <br /> <br />Irrigation Facilities. One of the major prOblems experi- <br /> <br /> <br />enced by the District was the lack of adequate peal~ing <br /> <br /> <br />capacity, due partially to a one crop econo~y (90 percent <br /> <br /> <br />corn). When the systems were designed in the late 1930's, <br /> <br /> <br />the goal was to prevent crop failures during periods of <br /> <br /> <br />drought by providing only supplementary water. However, the <br /> <br /> <br />farm operator must now maximize crop production every year. <br /> <br /> <br />For example, much of the present system was being operated <br /> <br />to supply about 3.8 rom/day for the predominant corn crop. <br /> <br /> <br />The optimum peak der:1and is about 7 mm/day.
