Water not diverted to the

irrigation syst~ms is returned to the river at the Phelps

headgate or below the Jeffrey Power Plant.

The irrigation system consists of three separate feeder

canals--the E65, E67, and Phelps Systems--with a combined

length of 193 km of main canal and 756 km of distribution

laterals. Delivering irrigation water since 1940, the

unlined canal system carried water to an area of 46,500 ha

in 1976 in the tri-county area of Gasper, Phelps, and

Kearney Counties. The project has been known locally as

"Tri-County" since the 1930's.

E65 System.
