pipe contains an upward oriented blind tee upstream from the gate valve to per-

mit temporary diversion of discharge from the pipeline if tIle well must be reha-

bilitated or test pumped.

B. Pipeline Laterals

The project includes approximately 115 miles of pipeline laterals. These

1 ateral s transport water from the sal vage well s to the conveyance channel in

Stages 1 through 4. Stage 5 will be a total pipe system, merging with the con-

veyance channel at the northwest boundary of Stage 4. All of the laterals are

low pressure systems. Many of the laterals are gravity-flow lines. Pipe diame-

ters range from 4 to 27 inches and a minimum cover over the pipe of 4.5 feet

provides protection from freezing. Contract specifications permitted the use of

virtually any type of pipe, but to date all but about 10,000 feet has been poly-

vinyl chloride (PVC). This 2-mile reach was constructed with asbestos-cement

pipe.

In addition to installing the pipelines, the lateral contracts included the

construction of the well head vaults, installation of the mechanical and

electrical equipment, and the access roads adjacent to the pipelines.

C. Conveyance Channel

The project conveyance channel provides the means of collecting the

salvaged ground water from the pipeline laterals and delivering it to the
Rio Grande. The channel is approximately 42 miles in length with the design
capacity increasing from 45 ft3/s to a maximum of 160 ft3/s. Bottom widths
range from 8 to 22 feet, and water depths from 3.6 to 5.6 feet. The flat
terrain of the Closed Basin and the invert of the Rio Grande dictated the use of

a very flat channel gradient that produces a flow velocity of about 1 ft/s.

6

r- - -.-1 f.:'
\)..,.........:1...,u
